Filing Tips to Avoid I-589 Asylum Application Rejection

USCIS shared that they have been rejecting more paper I-589 Asylum and Withholding of Removal applications recently because they are incomplete or improperly filed.

With that said, here are some filing tips to help make sure your application is not rejected:

  • Review the instructions for Form I-589 and double check eligibility for yourself and any family filing with you

  • Use USCIS' Filing Instructions Tool to determine if you can file online

  • Make sure you are submitting the newest edition of the I-589.  You can find the edition date at the bottom of the page on the form and instructions.  At the time of this writing, the newest edition date is 03/01/23

  • You must include all pages of Form I-589

  • Make sure that the form edition date and page numbers are visible at the bottom of all pages and that all pages are from the same form edition.

  • You must sign the form in Part D on Page 9.

  • You must complete Form I-589 in English, including explanation fields on the form.

  • Do not submit a passport-style photo, multiple copies of the form, or multiple copies of supporting documentation when submitting Form I-589.

  • See the ‘Form Filing Tips’ section of the Form I-589 page for additional filing tips.

  • Make sure you are filing to the correct location. Check the 'Where to File' section on the USCIS page about the I-589, or use the USCIS Filing Instructions Tool
