Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Certain Lebanese Nationals
What is Deferred Enforced Departure (DED)?
DED is a temporary program that authorizes people from certain countries to stay in the United States when it’s not safe for them to return home. The current DED period for Lebanon allows certain Lebanese nationals to stay in the United States and work until January 25, 2026.
Who is eligible for DED Lebanon?
This program is for nationals of Lebanon who are physically present in the United States and are non-U.S. citizens. You do not have to apply for DED.
This designation automatically covers you if you are eligible and meet the requirements described below.
You can prove you are Lebanese with these documents:
Lebanese passport
Lebanese birth certificate
Lebanese identification card
Other requirements:
You have not voluntarily returned to Lebanon after July 26, 2024.
You must have been living in the United States continuously since July 26, 2024.
You are not inadmissible or deportable.
You do not have a serious criminal record (felony conviction or two or more misdemeanor convictions).
You are not a threat to public safety or national security.
How long does DED last?
The current period of DED for Lebanon will last until January 25, 2026.
What are the benefits of DED?
Protection from deportation while covered by DED.
You can apply for permission to work in the United States. If you’re an international student (F-1 visa), you can also apply for a work permit under DED. Talk to an immigration lawyer to see how it might affect your student status.
How to apply for work authorization:
Fill out Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization).
Provide documents that prove your identity, nationality, and that you’ve been living in the United States
Pay the fee (or ask for a fee waiver if you qualify). Check with an immigration attorney to know when to apply for DED benefits and how to renew your status and work permit if DED is extended past January 25, 2026.
DED does not give you a path to become a permanent resident or U.S. citizen.
You must keep living in the United States during the DED period. Any trips outside of the United States may end the DED.
If you break U.S. laws, your DED status could be taken away.
TPS is also available for Lebanese applicants as of November 27, 2024.
If you have questions about DED or need help applying, please contact your immigration lawyer.
